While Western medicine focuses on physiological detail to formulate a view of a person's condition, the Eastern approach concentrates more on what could be called ’body cosmology’.

Emphasis is placed on the individual's qi, prevention, and living life by Tao and the cycle of yin and yang. The Chinese express this understanding not only in oriental medicine but also in art, literature, diet, astrology, and feng shui.

From the East, we have gained an integrating, intuitive, and logical mode of thinking based on the rational concepts of yin and yang. In the West, we have gained a technical and scientific process. Summer is here!🌞These next few months are generally quite warm. Now regarding what we eat— why does this matter? Well, as temperatures rise, our bodies need to be cooled down! This is the perfect time to eat more raw foods that can clear heat. But, as with anything, don't overdo it! Or you may cause trouble in your digestive tract.

Try your best to avoid heavy, greasy, and fried foods during this time. Add in summer veggies and fruits as they are cooling in nature. Throw in plenty of fresh greens whenever you can, as they are neutral to cooling.

Relish this time, absorb some Vitamin D, and allow your body to relax and enjoy what Mother Nature has provided to us🌱

The following Shen-nourishing herbs connect us to our spirit and its gifts, and the joy that results from that. They awaken the vitality of our fire or temper it when exaggerated, so we can better intuit what we are here to do and experience.

—Reishi: this slightly bitter medicinal mushroom was known to the ancient Taoists as the “elixir of immortality.” It is adaptogenic, regulating our hormones and nervous system so that we can feel grounded in our body and centered in our heart, or “at home.”
—Rose: also bitter, yet fragrant, its medicine addresses “a broken heart” and restores emotional balance. Its buds or petals can be used in teas, added to water, used to flavor vinegar, or infused into (local) honey.
—Cacao: this bitter plant boosts our mood, energetically opening our heart in a way that fosters connection with others (best used in moderation when dry conditions are present in the body).
—Chrysanthemum: has a sweet and bitter taste and lubricating, calming, properties that cool the liver (which is vulnerable to heat) and soothe dry eyes. Try preparing a cold infusion: pour cool water over a handful of the flowers in a jar and let it steep, ideally in the sun, to connect with the fire element. You also can add dried rosebuds to this.
—Green tea (or matcha, its concentrated version): is bitter, cooling, and antioxidant-rich.
